Education for the Busy Lifestyle
By Debra Moore for EMSAT
“I want to get a college degree, but have no time to sit in a class. Any suggestions?”
“I need a legitimate, accredited school that offers online degrees. I work well over 40 hours a week, and I just don’t have time to sit in a classroom. However, I want the same kind of degree I would get otherwise. HELP!”
These are just a few of the comments found on a website about education. And the great news is there are answers to these questions. With the changes in education, it is now possible to earn a fully accredited degree, even with your active, busy lifestyle. How?
Credit-by-exam and online degrees are growing in order to meet the changing needs of working adults. Almost all of us are familiar with online degrees, but what is credit-by-exam or “testing out of class”?
Credit-by-examination is widely accepted at over 3,800 colleges and universities around the country. Instead of going to college class several times a week, the student goes to a local test site just once per class to have an examination administered. The exam is equivalent to the final exam for a course. If you pass the final exam, you are awarded college credit because you’ve proven you know the material even though you never took the class. Sounds difficult, right? Keep reading.
There are a number of options for EMTs and EMT-Ps in the state of Texas to earn degrees even with their 12-hour shifts and busy lifestyles. EMT-Ps can earn an online Bachelor in Emergency Health Science Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The Texas core can be earned by taking proficiency exams and the remainder of the classes are taken online through the college. UTHSCSA is a proud partner of iStudySmart.com.
EMT-Ps who wish to become nurses can complete their Associate in Nursing Degree from Excelsior College in Albany, NY, and sit for TX state boards. All courses except a 1-hour Information Literacy and a clinical component can be done through credit-by-exam. iStudySmart.com is recognized by Excelsior College for its Best Practices in Test Preparation Providers.
EMTs without their paramedic license have the option of earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Excelsior College. A minimum of 60 semester hours of credit can be earned through credit-by-examination. Again, iStudySmart.com was the first to meet the Best Practices criteria established by Excelsior College.
So what are the benefits of credit-by-exam and why should you consider earning credit by “testing out”?
- Study at your own pace with no set time to attend class or complete the class
- Study wherever you want to study—even at work during your down time
- Start anytime
- Save from 20-70% on tuition costs
Credit-by-exam must be difficult since the exam covers the entire coursework, right? Earning credit by testing out isn’t any easier than taking the course. However, it is much more convenient to your busy lifestyle.
iStudySmart.com has guaranteed sets of study material that cover everything that would be in the college class. Materials can be purchased in online, CD ROM or workbook format. The assignments map to the examinations, and each course has hundreds of sample questions set up in multiple choice format, just like the exams. Once you learn the content of iStudySmart.com courses, you will be able to pass the examinations. Texas EMTs and EMT-Ps get discounts on iStudySmart.com courses and EMSAT members earn even more discounts.
“One of the best perks about using our courses is being able to build your education around the demands of your life rather than building your life around the demands of an education,” says Debra Moore, President of iStudySmart.com. “So enjoy your busy lifestyle and earn your degree at the same time.”
